چکیده

This work shows a perspective of the different researches on musical composition using evolutionary techniques. It is made a classification based on the critic element of the different compositions. Four types of works are analyzed: Interactive, based on examples, rule-based and autonomous ones. Finally it is proposed the integration of the several works in a common frame, where different approaches can compete and/or collaborate to create global compositions that can be adapted to different types of music, and so include the advantages of the different techniques. Key-Words: Evolutionary Computation, Adaptive Systems, Artificial Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Musical Composition.

On the Music of Emergent Behavior: What Can Evolutionary Computation Bring to the Musician?

In this article, the author focuses on issues concerning musical composition practices in which emergent behavior is used to generate musical material, musical form or both. The author gives special attention to the potential of cellular automata and adaptive imitation games for music-making. The article begins by presenting two case-study systems, followed by an assessment of their role in the...

On the Music of Emergent Behaviour What can Evolutionary Computation bring to the Musician?

This paper focuss on issues concerning musical composition practices in which the emergent behaviour of computational processes is used to generate either musical material, musical form, or both. Special attention will be given to the potential of cellular automata and adaptive games for music-making. We begin the paper with an introduction to CAMUS and Chaosynth, two cellular automata-based mu...

Music Composition with Interactive Evolutionary Computation

The interactive evolutionary computation (IEC), i.e., an evolutionary computation whose fitness function is provided by users, has been applied to aesthetic areas, such as art, design and music. We cannot always define fitness functions explicitly in these areas. With IEC, however, the user's implicit preference can be embedded into the optimization system. This paper describes a new approach t...

Chaos and Music: from Time Series Analysis to Evolutionary Composition

Music is an amalgam of logic and emotion, order and dissonance, along with many combinations of contradicting notions which allude to deterministic chaos. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that several research works have examined the utilization of dynamical systems for symbolic music composition. The main motivation of the paper at hand is the analysis of the tonal composition potentialities...

Generating Musical Accompaniment through Functional Scaffolding

A popular approach to music generation in recent years is to extract rules and statistical relationships by analyzing a large corpus of musical data. The aim of this paper is to present an alternative to such data-intensive techniques. The main idea, called functional scaffolding for musical composition (FSMC), exploits a simple yet powerful property of multipart compositions: The pattern of no...
